Get friendly URLs for hundreds of new extensions with the latest sh404SEF®

sh404SEF® remains at the forefront of URL managers for Joomla and it’s popularity stems in large part from the gorgeous URLs that can be created. In addition to SEO benefits, many sh404SEF® users simply love how a site is pulled together with a consistent set of URLs across the many extensions used on a typical Joomla web site.

Thus, we actively recruit our developer colleagues to ensure compatibility between their extensions and sh404SEF®. Recent examples of this collaboration include JoomlaWorks (K2), redCOMPONENT (RedShop), YooTheme (ZOO), Alphaplug(AlphaContent) and of course JVitals (Agora Forum).

To further maximize the extensions supported by sh404SEF®, today we are introducing two new features that provide immediate support for hundreds of new extensions.

First, sh404SEF® now supports installable plugins. This means that extension developers have the option to distribute standalone sh404SEF® plugins as a separate package that uses the standard Joomla installer. This can reduce package sizes for developers, and also makes the installation fast and easy for end users.

In addition, end users can override a native sh404SEF® plugin (i.e. one that resides within the /sef_ext/ folder of an extension) by installing a Joomla plugin for sh404SEF® and thus easily customize URL rewriting without having to worry about losing the changes when an extension is upgraded. Of course we were careful to maintain backward compatibility with all existing sh404SEF® plugins.

The second feature immediately expands extension support. sh404SEF® now supports plugins from two other URL managers, JoomSEF and AceSEF. Together, that represents over 300 new sh404SEF® plugins and scores of new extensions (see additional resources below). As with native Joomla plugins for sh404SEF®, end users can decide on an extension-by-extension basis which SEF URL plugin to use:

  • sh404SEF® plugin
  • Joomla Router (core SEF)
  • JoomSEF plugin
  • AceSEF plugin

JoomSEF and AceSEF plugin parameters will be specified directly in the plugin and respected by sh404SEF® when writing URLs.

Our testing with approximately 25 JoomSEF and AceSEF plugins have yielded great success. Thus, we have updated documentation and developer resources to accommodate these new features. In case issues arise with some of the other plugins, our support staff are always ready to assist.
