Like nGinx you need to run php as fastcgi, but being as the lighttpd project manages one of the most common fastcgi servers (some distributions require you to install lighttpd if you are running nGinx and need fast-cgi as they have lighttpd and fastcgi in the same package.

To use sh404sef you need to make sure the following line is in lighttpd.conf:

       server.error-handler-404   = "/index.php"

Then tell Joomla and sh404sef that you are using .htaccess. (you are not, but it will work anyways).

It is recommended that you enable sh404sef security as you cannot get any protection from a .htaccess file.
