Find the nearest event with the new Locations feature in JCal Pro® for Joomla 2.5

Besides the date and time, knowing the location of meeting, concert or even a flashmob is critical to the success of the event.

JCal Pro® has always included a Contact field where people could include location information for their events. However, this implementation was not always satisfactory.

For example, there was no way to store locations for quick access when creating new events. Thus, the same location had to be manually entered each time it was needed.

In addition, there was no way to display any geographic information about the events scheduled in a particular area.

That all changes with today’s release of JCal Pro®.

I am happy to announce that JCal Pro® 3.1 for Joomla 2.5 is currently available and ships with a robust location manager that overcomes prior limitations and adds exciting, new possibilities for event management and geolocation.

Create locations with a simple name or address

When creating or editing events in JCal Pro® 3.1, you’ll notice a new Change Location button in the event editor. Before the event details can be saved, you must select this button and supply a Name and Address for the location of the event.

The information you provide in the Address field will then be used to determine the exact geographic coordinates using Google Maps.

This map locator will be as specific as possible. For example, if you only type 'Manhattan' as the address, Google Maps will locate the center of the city as the location. If you instead enter a full mailing address, the exact location will be displayed.

Location Editor

Manage locations and reuse as needed

As shown above, adding a location is very straightforward and many people will simply do this as needed during event creation.

However, these events can be reused as often as is appropriate. When you first select the 'Change Location' button, you will be presented with a list of existing locations to choose from. This is very efficient when multiple users are adding events to the same calendar as the exact address and geographic location for each entry is clearly shown.

We also built a dedicated location manager in the Joomla backend. This allows site administrators to update all locations in a central place. This is a very convenient tool for simultaneously updating the location of many events that are scheduled at the same place.

Location Manager

Display locations and find events near you

While location management is important, often the visual result of displaying all the events on a map inspires a more enthusiastic response from visitors to your Joomla web site. Thus we created a Locations Module to make it easy to show your events to the world.

As you can see below, the familiar Google Maps interface is shown with markers for each location that has an upcoming event. Selecting a marker displays both a local map of that location and a list of all upcoming events occurring there.

The same module can also be used to locate events within a specified distance to a user's location. When the Geolocation option is enabled, a user viewing the Locations Module will be prompted to share their location and any events within a specified range will be displayed.

For convenience, you can specify the size of the map, the default center coordinates and toggle the zoom controls.
